Oceanic Conveyor in the Atlantic

The drought of the 1930's dust bowl in America coincided with a simultaneous climate shift in the weather of Europe and it is now thought to be the result of a change in the movement patterns in the Atlantic waters, including a change in the so-called "conveyor".

Scientists now believe that the ocean current conveyor in the Atlantic has a critical point where it could actually just switch off. Crossing that threshold would mean that instead of getting gradual global warming (the kind it's easy for irresponsible and impotent government to ignore), we will end up with a sudden, dramatic change that we will have absolutely no idea how to reverse.
